TAMARA KREISLER Gallery

14th September – 28th October 2023, Madrid

This exhibition is the result of Juan’s Greek summers. Ikaria, is one of the most unknown and fascinating islands in Greece. His discovery and the transformative experience lived there are the origin of “IKARIA”, the exhibition which opens today, October 14, at TAMARA KREISLER Gallery within the framework of Apertura Madrid Gallery Weekend, and will remain open until October 28.

In “IKARIA”, Gerstl seeks to convey that intense feeling of discovery and wonder through his works, in which Juan, an exponent of geometric art, incorporates materials that he had never used before, such as wood, ceramic mosaic, paint or paper. Each piece represents a fragment of the magic experienced on the island, and invites the viewer to immerse themselves in this fascinating world and reflect on the importance of maintaining our roots and valuing the treasures that nature and culture offer us.

“The aromas of wild herbs that rose into the air, the taste of traditional dishes that awakened my palate, the softness of the sand under my feet, the sound of the sea whispering ancient melodies and the view of the impressive landscapes that They left you breathless. All this led me to a state of constant amazement and admiration,” have inspired him. Ikaria is a place where time seems to stop, where traditions are kept alive and where the community cares for each other. The longevity of its inhabitants – it is not uncommon there to exceed one hundred years – is testimony to this.

Juan Gerstl is known as the artist of geometric poetry. Form, volume and symmetry make up a narrative in which movement is synonymous with harmony and beauty hides mathematical precision. Starting from the hexagon – as a perfect symbol of sacred geometry -, the artist simultaneously breaks and creates the balance of nature, and establishes a dialogue, rather a passionate conversation, that seeks to transform our consciousness, without violence, in a suggestive way.
