After exhibiting chapters one and two at the TAMARA KREISLER Gallery, we now present
THE ECHO OF OUR VOICES, the fourth chapter in the The Day May Break series.

This series was photographed in Jordan, considered the second most water-scarce country in the world. The photographs feature refugee families who fled the war in Syria and are now living in Jordan. Their lives are ones of continuous displacement, due in large part to climate change; they are forced to move their homes several times a year in search of agricultural work, moving to wherever there has been sufficient rainfall to allow crops to grow.

The podiums on which the families sit and stand point towards the sky—a verticality implying a greater sense of strength or defiance—and provide pedestals for those in our society who are typically invisible and unheard.

“Brandt strikes a flawless balance between harsh and soft elements; in this case, the delicate meeting between the roughness of the desert, the refugees’ stories, and the warmth of the family. The refugees come alive through his photos; the physical connection emanates affection, and in the children’s eyes there are crystal-clear dreams. In a world that so frequently dehumanizes Arabs, especially Arab women who fall victim to stereotypical depictions as oppressed and voiceless beings, Brandt has given these women a platform (literally) to reclaim their power.”
